I've been going to PT twice a week for about a month now, and things are looking up. I'm regaining range of motion at a respectable rate, and the pain is coming down, too. I had a follow-up with the orthopedic nurse practitioner today, and she seemed happy with my progress. She had consulted with the surgeons in the group and was able to clarify the diagnosis. I have a stress fracture. It doesn't require a cast or brace or anything - just rest and PT. But technically speaking, I broke my arm playing piano, which is pretty weird.
So far the break from playing hasn't been too depressing. I miss it, though, and I'm counting the days until I can start up again. I've been filling up my time with alternate music projects, too, which helps a lot.
There is, of course, composing. My current project is a lot of fun. I'm writing a piece for [livejournal.com profile] a_dodecahedron's a cappella group Lager Rhythms. It requires a very different style from the pieces I've written in the past. And they asked me to set a really cool text: Newton's Laws of Motion. With the option to incorporate the original Latin, even. I've thought up simple musical devices to illustrate each law. I'm having a blast.
I've also decided to do a little study of various world musics using books from the Oxford Press Global Music Series. Each one comes with a CD of musical examples, which are discussed in the text. The books are short and thus don't provide exhaustive, in-depth analysis, but they are quite solid.

I am so glad your arm is improving! Even though I imagine if it could all be better by now that would be best.

There is something sort of hilarious about breaking your arm playing a piano. Less hilarious when it's, you know, your calling, though.

It was a completely unexpected diagnosis. Stress fractures are usually seen in the feet of marathon runners and dancers. I'm really glad it's nothing that requires invasive treatments.

YAY for better arms! I go back to the dr. next week to see, too.

*good vibes for both of us!*

What happened to your arm? I hope it's healing well, too.

I'm so glad that they've figured out what happened and that the PT/rest is helping. I'm looking forward to starting up again after opera has run its course and the arm is well on its way to be healed...

I'm looking forward to practicing and rehearsing, too. We'll probably have to take it easy at first, though.
