Me and my arm
Jun. 18th, 2009 10:28 pmI've been going to PT twice a week for about a month now, and things are looking up. I'm regaining range of motion at a respectable rate, and the pain is coming down, too. I had a follow-up with the orthopedic nurse practitioner today, and she seemed happy with my progress. She had consulted with the surgeons in the group and was able to clarify the diagnosis. I have a stress fracture. It doesn't require a cast or brace or anything - just rest and PT. But technically speaking, I broke my arm playing piano, which is pretty weird.
So far the break from playing hasn't been too depressing. I miss it, though, and I'm counting the days until I can start up again. I've been filling up my time with alternate music projects, too, which helps a lot.
There is, of course, composing. My current project is a lot of fun. I'm writing a piece for
a_dodecahedron's a cappella group Lager Rhythms. It requires a very different style from the pieces I've written in the past. And they asked me to set a really cool text: Newton's Laws of Motion. With the option to incorporate the original Latin, even. I've thought up simple musical devices to illustrate each law. I'm having a blast.
I've also decided to do a little study of various world musics using books from the Oxford Press Global Music Series. Each one comes with a CD of musical examples, which are discussed in the text. The books are short and thus don't provide exhaustive, in-depth analysis, but they are quite solid.
