by Jennifer Egan
This deft novel intertwines stories from the lives of Bennie Salazar, former punk rocker turned record executive, and Sasha, his troubled young assistant. The story is structured almost more like a set of related and interlocking short stories with a changing cast of point-of-view characters, so that we see Sasha and Bennie both through their own eyes and through the eyes of others. It's surprisingly effective and poignant, even when a character is present only briefly. With just a handful of glimpses. Egan shows you the full sweep of what Sasha and Bennie have gained and lost over their lives, and how the progress of time has changed them (or not changed them). Sasha and Bennie, and several of the secondary characters, were beautifully drawn and felt so real in all their flaws and struggles and moments of grace and connection.
