I have an extra ticket to the Boston Philharmonic concert this Saturday at 8pm at Jordan Hall (here in Boston). They are playing the Rachmaninoff 2nd piano concerto and a symphony by Nielsen. Anyone want to go with me?

Ooh, very tempting. I don't think I even have anything going on that night. When do I have to let you know?

By Thursday night, if you can. It should be a good concert - I know one of the violinists in the orchestra and she said that the soloist for the Rachmaninov is very, very good.

Ooh. I wish I was in Boston.

I'm a bigger fan of the 3rd Concerto, but would still enjoy hearing Rachmaninov live. And I should really listen to more Nielsen. Speaking of the Rach Concertos, however, have you heard any of the recordings of Rachmaninov performing the piano parts? He took some fiendishly fast tempi, perhaps just to show off his virtuosity. I prefer a slower tempo that really lets the lush moments shine.

Yes, I have recordings of Rachmaninov himself playing. Unfortunately, I haven't listened to them for quite some time. However, that may be a good thing, as it will allow me to hear Saturday's performance with relatively fresh ears.
