Captain Alatriste
by Arturo Perez-Reverte

I am really glad that this book is the first of a series, because it was so satisfying. Taking place in 17th century Spain, it introduces Captain Diego Alatriste y Tenorio, a brooding swordsman. Beautifully and intelligently written, the story has adventure, intrigue, poetry, and swordfights.

Ooh, yay for more Perez-Reverte! I'm glad this one is good - he's so good at setting up a premise and drawing out the intrigue, but I feel like his endings don't always follow through.

And yay, the library has it! I'm definitely going to check this one out. Thanks for the review!

The ending on this one does leave a few things up in the air, but since it's the first in a six(?) book series, it's probably better that way.
I forgot to mention that there is a Spanish movie coming out based on these books, with Viggo Mortensen as Captain Alatriste. (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0395119/)

adventure, intrigue, poetry, and swordfights.

And really, what more do you need in a novel? :-)

Yeah, I could have said a little more about the book, but I thought most of my flist wouldn't need to know any more than that.
