Updates and Stuff
Oct. 21st, 2005 10:13 pmThis fall (since July, really) I seem to be more musically busy than I have been since finishing my masters. I just completed the preparation of some orchestra parts for my sister (NEC does readings of student pieces). Unfortunately, I won't be able to play in her quintet in December. I just can't learn the part fast enough. There are some very tricky rhythms that must be played at breakneck speeds, and I'm just not quite good enough a pianist to learn it as fast as I would need to to be ready. I'm kind of bummed, because it's a cool piece and would be a lot of fun to play. But I need 6 months of private practice and ensemble rehearsals, not 6 weeks, to be ready. At least I was able to figure this out in plenty of time for
epilimnion to find another player.
Luckily, when one door closes, another one opens. It looks like I'll be doing some vocal pieces with
pantsie. I've never worked with a singer before, so I'm really excited about this. I think I may be writing something for voice once I get finished with my large ensemble piece for Oregon.
Speaking of the large ensemble piece, I've finished writing 99% of the music, so now it's orchestration time. The instrumentation is two violins, viola, cello, piano, flute, clartinet, and baritone saxophone, plus some percussive effects on those instruments. The underlying image I used as a sort of inspiration or conceptual aid (because it's not a programmatic piece) is the idea of caves and the subterranean. I'm not sure why I hit upon this, maybe it has something to do with the fact that I casually go underground every day for my commute, without ever thinking about it. And I have vivid memories of visiting caverns on a couple of childhood family vacations.
And of course, I practice piano just about every day, and continue to have rehearsals for the trio.
It looks like we've settled into the colder weather portion of the fall already. It seemed to happen rather suddenly this year. I am much less unhappy about this, since the heat came on in our apartment very early this morning. I was awakened by the hissing and whistling of our radiators. It's really the most beautiful sound in the world when your place has been hovering on the edges of uncomfortably chilly since Monday.
