by Libba Bray
In this sequel to A Great and Terrible Beauty, Gemma and her friends explore the realms further in an attempt to find the Temple, its source of magic. This plays out against the background of a glittering Christmas season in London. Many things go awry, but Gemma and her friends learn what they need to in order to move forward.
Rebel Angels is the middle book of a trilogy, so very little is resolved, although there are some good plot twists. I really enjoyed the contrast of the realms with the social whirl of the holidays among the upper crust. Bray juxtaposes the forces that wish to dictate what Gemma and her friends do in the realms with with the forces that wish to dictate what they do socially. Gemma and her friends also have some good character development as they grow in experience and knowledge.
