by Lenora Bell
This historical romance was pretty fluffy, but also very sweet. Lady Beatrice Bentley is an aspiring etymologist holed up at her brother's estate to work on her scholarly dictionary. Alas, her work keeps being interrupted by the noisy and distracting renovations her brother is having done. Beatrice is most annoyed by Ford Wright, the obnoxious yet handsome head carpenter. When Beatrice's mother insists she return to London for another season on the marriage market, Beatrice thinks she is done with distracting carpenters. However, shortly after her return to the city, she discovers she has inherited a bookshop that needs some serious repairs. And the only skilled carpenter available happens to be Ford. Their attraction to each other grows beyond the physical as they find a lot of things to admire and appreciate in each other.
The plot of Love Is a Rogue is a bit far-fetched and silly, but the relationship between Ford and Beatrice is genuinely warm and sweet. He truly values and loves her intelligence and fierce independence, and she really likes his confidence and competence. They really support each other in some very lovely ways. The ending does dispense with the problems of class differences too quickly and easily, but given how light-hearted the book is, it mostly works.
