by Ness Brown
This space horror novella is very much a pastiche of Alien, but I didn't mind because it is quite well done. As acting captain of the starship Calypso, Jacklyn Albright is dealing with a damaged ship, dwindling food supplies and unrest among the former colonists. Things are looking bleak when a new threat emerges: a hostile alien life form that is brutally murdering the crew.
Even though the plot treads very familiar ground, it was still very compelling. Brown adds enough different elements to make it a retelling and not a rip-off. She's very good at creating suspense and scares in a very short amount of time. Plus, the characters were all really interesting and largely likeable. I really liked Jacklyn and the robot Watson.
