This is the final volume of the Bill Hodges trilogy, and it was a satisfying if sad end to the series. This time Bill and his associate Holly are investigating a mysterious murder-suicide involving one of the victims of the Mercedes Killer. Some unusual clues found at the scene lead Bill and Holly to believe that there is something strange going on. Things get really interesting and scary when their investigation leads them back to the Mercedes Killer, Brady Hartsfield, who is paralyzed and recovering from a serious brain injury.
I enjoyed this book quite a bit. The plot was more suspenseful and complicated than that of the middle book, and I liked the way King brought things back around into a not-quite full circle. I especially liked the way King unfolded the more traditionally paranormal horror elements of the story. Brady remains a mean-spirited, small-minded villain, which makes him all the more frightening in some ways. His plot to drive multiple people to suicide was terrifyingly callous and cruel. Bill and Holly make such a great team, and the way they work together in this book is great. I also loved the portrayal of platonic love between Holly, Bill, and Jerome.
