by Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa
This mid-century Italian novel largely takes place in the early 1860s, right around when the Risorgimento united Italy. It's the story of Fabrizio Salina, an aging member of the Sicilian nobility, watching the slow decline of the aristocracy and their way of life as the politics and government of Italy change. The plot coalesces around the marriage of Fabrizio's beloved nephew Tancredi to Angelica, the daughter of a nouveau riche family. This is the fulcrum and catalyst for the family's slow slide into obscurity. It's a novel that alternately has the warmth of a late sunset and the bitterness of the last wisp of smoke from an extinguished fire.
