by Bec McMaster
This steampunk fantasy romance is set in a dark and gothic London in which vampirism is a virus that gradually changes people from otherwise human blood drinkers into violent nosferatu. Honoria Todd used to live among the vampiric aristocracy and assist her scientist father's studies of the virus. When he is on the verge of discovering a treatment for the virus, he is murdered, and Honoria and her two siblings find themselves impoverished and hiding in the London underbelly of Whitechapel. There she meets Balde, a vampire and underworld boss. Their strong wills clash and also ignite a complicated passion between them, but the dangers of their world threaten their future together.
I liked this romance for a lot of reasons. Vampires aren't usually my thing in romances, but McMaster has an interesting take on vampirism that worked well with her characters and story. While Blade was often a bit too alpha for me, I did like his true appreciation for Honoria's intelligence and backbone. Honoria is a little naive in some ways, but very smart and very determined.
