Rest of the Weekend
Apr. 18th, 2005 12:30 pmThis was the first good-weather weekend of the year that I got to spend at home, and it was lovely. Other Kenjari and I went for a long walk along the Charles river (on the Allston side) yesterday, and it was actually hot out. There were tons of other people out, too, biking, walking, rollerblading, and picnicking.
On Saturday night, we went out to see Sin City. It's hideously violent, but nevertheless a joy to watch. The silvery black-and-white digital visuals evoked both classic film noir and the best of comic-book art. And the use of repeated visual and verbal motifs gave unity to a heavily segmented script. for those of us who like comics and graphic novels, Sin City was quite a treat.
I also started preparing for the Oregon Bach Festival. Got my plane ticket - flights are so much cheaper when you can buy them way in advance. Filled out the first part of the paperwork via e-mail. Sent out my deposit this morning. It turns out I have to write a new piece for the symposium, before June 1st, for double-bass and piano. Luckily, it only has to be 5-8 minutes. Even more luckily, I got a good idea the minute I received this information. My piece will be based on material taken from Tom Waits' work. It seems appropriate, given the instrumentation. Plus, having such a strong reference point will help me write the piece quicker. I am once again grateful that Dr. Bell encouraged me to compose quickly rather than lingering over a piece.
