Wicked and the Wallflower
by Sarah MacLean

This historical romance was quite good, and I especially liked the way it departed from the world of the aristocracy. Felicity Faircloth is on the verge of spinsterhood, excluded from the core of society due to some minor scandals and her father and brother losing the family fortune. Devon "Devil" Culm is a highly successful smuggler and denizen of the underworld of Covent Garden. When he encounters Felicity one night, he decides to use her as part of a revenge plot against his half-brother the Duke of Marwich. However, his intentions don't survive a half hour in her presence, as he finds her to be intelligent, lovely, and fascinating. AS Felicity learns more about Devil and his world, she finds herself increasingly attracted to him and his world. Thus begins an overwhelming passion.
I really liked reading a historical that took place largely outside the world of the upper crust. I liked having a hero who had real work to do in a setting with more grit and practicality. I loved Felicity. Over the course of the novel, she learns to assert herself and fiercely fight for her own agency and her own goals for her life. She has real backbone and courage. She also has a sharp and bold wit, leading to a lot of excellent banter. Devil is a man who thinks love, and especially Felicity, is not for him and learns how wrong he is. The intensity of his feelings and the way they develop are wonderfully swoony.
