by Susanna Craig
In this historical second chance romance, Maxim, spy for the British government, has returned to England after six years working in France, to claim the Dukedom he has inherited and to reunite with Caro, the wife he abandoned but can't forget. Caro has spent the last half dozen years living in Brighton, forging an independent life and trying her best to manage the demands of her domineering and unpleasant father. When Maxim returns, they both find that their initial attraction has not cooled and that they desperately want to re-establish their relationship. If only the dangers of Maxim's profession hadn't followed him home.
I loved this romance. This is very much a story that doesn't rely on failures of communication to create tension or conflict. Maxim and Caro both have a lot to resolve and they do it by having honest conversations and being vulnerable with each other. I love the means he uses to rebuild her trust in him and to show he cares, and I love how she quickly grasps the demons that haunt him and how to help him overcome them. The spy plot is good, if easy to figure out. In addition, there's a secondary romance between the agents sent to Brighton to keep and eye on Maxim and Caro.
