by Laini Taylor
This is the second book in the Daughter of Smoke and Bone trilogy, and it's a middle book that does the middle book thing very well. A lot happens, not much is fully resolved, and things are lined up for the endgame, but it's all absorbing and still satisfying to read. Karou and Akiva spend much of the book apart, on opposite sides of the war between seraphim and chimera. The war is has come to its final stage, with the chimera facing impending annihilation, and the warmongering seraphim leadership looking for a new conflict to pursue and group to subjugate. Akiva is back with the seraphim army but employing covert ways to resist and undermine the destruction, while Karou is stuck in an uneasy and dangerous alliance with the Wolf, war leader of the remaining chimera, trying desperately to save what she can of her people.
Days of Blood & Starlight is really about people desperately trying to find hope and the path to a better way in the midst of war, death, disaster, and heartbreak. while a lot of things happen, the heart of the story is the bonds between Karou and her friends and allies and Akiva and his, as well as the bond between Karou and Akiva that stubbornly persists in spite of everything that stands between them. There's also a lot about preservation and the sacrifices made for it in the face of overwhelming destruction. It'soften bleak but never too grim.
