Jennifer Higdon: Composing in Color
by Christina L. Reitz
This book focuses on Higdon's orchestral music, plus her opera Cold Mountain. The orchestra pieces covered are blue cathedral, Concerto for Orchestra, City Scape, Concerto 4-3, and Violin Concerto. For each piece, Reitz covers how it came to be composed, the compositional process, a detailed analysis, and the critical reception. The analyses rely a little too much on play-by-play description, but Reitz does as good a job with that as possible. She is very good at highlighting and explaining how features fit into and relate to Higdon's overall style. I found the chapters on blue cathedral, Concerto 4-3, and Cold Mountain the most interesting.
