This historical romance is a second chance romance between Thomas, a former spy for the British Army and Jane, an author of very successful lurid gothic novels. Years ago, they fell in love right before Thomas was sent overseas and Jane was disowned by her family. Now Jane is renting Castle Dunnock in the Scottish Highlands and Thomas has returned home to find he is the heir to the earldom of which Dunnock is the seat. To complicate matters further, Jane has been receiving threatening letters from an unknown person who strongly disapproves of her novels.
I liked this novel well enough. It was a little on the lighter side, especially where the intrigue was concerned. The mystery and secrets were easily resolved, and I liked the way Thomas and Jane unravel each other's secrets in a gentle and respectful way. I did enjoy that the threatening letter sub-plot introduced tension and conflict that didn't throw a wrench in the relationship between Thomas and Jane. Both leads were likable without being perfect and I liked their relationship.
