by Eddie Robson
I quite enjoyed this sci-fi murder mystery. It's set in a near-future New York city where first contact with the alien Logi has occurred some time ago and they are now effectively just another political entity for humans to deal with. Lydia works as a translator for the Logi cultural attache stationed in NYC. As such, she attends performances, exhibits, and other events with him. However, the Logi communicate telepathically and processing their language makes humans inebriated. When tragedy strikes, Lydia finds herself embroiled in a murder mystery and a strange conspiracy.
I really liked the conception of a world where aliens have arrived and are not intent on conquest or uplift, but have become just another group we work with. I liked Lydia a lot - she's smart and better at her job than she thinks she is and is a touch scrappy. I really liked her relationship with her boss - it was friendly and fond while still being professional, much like any good work relationship. There's some interesting exploration of how media and communication can be used to manipulate people, too.
