Do You Want to Start a Scandal
by Tessa Dare
In this amusing romance, Charlotte, the youngest Hightower daughter, is attending a house party at the Parkhurst estate, as she is close friends with Delia Parkhurst. Among the other guests is Piers Brandon, a marquess, diplomat, and sometime spy. Under a bit of a under a bit of a social cloud already due to her mother's aggressive attempts to marry her to a nobleman, Charlotte and Piers get falsely accused of being the couple who had a loud amorous encounter in the library. Piers offers to marry Charlotte, and she sets out to discover the identity of the two lovers. Over the course of their stay with the Parkhursts, Piers and Charlotte fall in love.
This romance both entertained me and warmed my heart. Charlotte and Piers are terrific characters and are great together. I loved how while Piers does find Charlotte physically attractive, what really starts the process of him falling for her is his admiration of her intelligence and perception. I loved those things about her, and also her determination that both she and Piers deserved a love match, whether or not it was with each other. She gets under all his defenses without crossing boundaries or being too forceful about it, allowing him to embrace emotions he'd long tamped down. The ways in which they take care of and challenge each other unfold beautifully.
