Someone to Cherish
by Mary Balogh

This penultimate novel in the Westcott series centers around Harry, the son of the central family group. After nearly dying at the Battle of Waterloo, he has spent a few years living almost entirely at the family's country estate, recuperating in mind and body. He is finally emerging into a desire for more in his life. Lydia Tavernor has just come out of morning for her husband, a vicar who died in a tragic accident. Her husband was a fervently religious and godly, but not a good husband, and Lydia found the marriage suffocating. She has finally found independence and freedom as a widow. As she and Harry get to know each other via social events in the village bordering his estate, they begin a tentative relationship, one that provokes a near scandal and real love.
This romance was just lovely. Harry and Lydia were both in the final stages of healing from their respective unhappy pasts, and I liked the way their relationship dovetailed with and supported that healing. The development of their feelings was not entirely straightforward and involved some confusion and uncertainty on both their parts, which made it all a real journey. I really liked how important Lydia's independence is to not only her, but also Harry. It all added up to a very warm and gently emotional story.
