To Catch a Raven
by Beverly Jenkins

This romance is set in the 1870s, mostly in New Orleans and South Carolina, with a bit in Boston. Raven Moreau is a a member of a large African-American family that has been building financial stability through a series of clever and lucrative grifts. Braxton Steele is the wealthy son of a former art forger and a veteran of the Massachusetts 54th living in Boston. Due to their ties to past and present criminal adventures, Raven and Braxton end up blackmailed into posing as a married couple in order to gain access to the home of a Senator who is in possession of a stolen copy of the Declaration of Independence. Yes, the plot is a little bonkers, but it does a great job of providing the set up and frame for the love story. Although there is a lot of friction between Raven and Braxton initially, their attraction to each other grows, as does a very passionate yet sweet relationship.
This book was the best out of the three so far I;ve read by Beverly Jenkins. Braxton is among the sexiest and sweetest male leads I've found in a romance novel. He's very seductive, but also very mindful of consent in a way that is super hot. I liked Raven a lot - she's very smart, takes no crap, and is very devoted to her loved ones. The teasing banter between the two of them was delightful, as was the genuinely caring relationship they develop.
