This short novel follows the title character over the course of her life in mid-20th century rural Indiana. Zorrie is born before the Depression, orphaned early, and raised by a rather unfeeling aunt. When the aunt dies, leaving her niece nothing, Zorrie must find her own way in the world. She drifts a bit, eventually finding work as a radium girl in Illinois. However, the pull of her home state is strong, and Zorrie soon returns to rural Indiana, finding work and eventually love in the farmland around the small town of Hillisburg.
Zorrie is a very quiet and subtle book, filled with the rhythms and moments of ordinary farm life. It's beautifully written without being obvious about it. Zorrie is a wonderful character - fairly ordinary yet very interesting. She's tenacious, hard-working, and compassionate. I like how despite terrible losses, she never stops finding small joys and really living her life.
