Harrow the Ninth
By Tamsyn Muir

This sequel to Gideon the Ninth is a strange and dark puzzle box of a novel. It picks up shortly after the events of its predecessor. Harrow is now on a space station with the other Lyctors, including her fellow new one Ianthe, and the undying Emperor. They are preparing to face a terrible threat. Unfortunately for Harrow, their seems to be something wrong with her transformation into a Lyctor, her memories of the events leading up to her Lyctorhood are wrong, and she is either hallucinating or being haunted by a long dead woman.
This book does not have the brashness of Gideon, and I missed that a bit. However, Harrow is very good. I'm very impressed with the way Muir pulls off confusing the reader just enough to keep them guessing and disoriented, but not enough to drive the reader away. The characters are endlessly interesting, the stakes are very high, and there are some revelations and twists that I never saw coming. It's all more than worth the effort.
