This work of magical realism is the story of the Montoya family, and particularly of their matriarch Orquidea Divina. At the end of her life, she invites her children and grandchildren to attend her death, the aftermath of which sends two of her grandchildren and her great-grandchild on a quest to discover the secrets she kept and deal with their consequences.
This novel was very absorbing and entertaining. Cordova beautifully wove together the stories of Orquidea's past and her descendants' present day lives. I really liked the way the magical elements worked, sometimes subtly and sometimes very clearly. The characters are very compelling. I particularly liked Orquidea with her strong will and fierce love for her family, and Marimar with her more quiet strength. I also liked the themes of choices and their consequences, and how stories bind a family together
