This historical romance is set in 1867 New Orleans and delves into the actual history of its setting more than most, and does it very, very well. Valinda Lacy is a free-born Black woman who has come to the city to teach in newly established schools for freed people. Drake LeVeq is an architect and builder, the younger son of a wealthy Black family. They meet when Drake and his sister-in-law avert an attack on Valinda. When the LeVeq family takes her in, she and Drake find their initial attraction deepening into love.

<Rebel is a pretty low-angst, sweet romance that was exactly what I needed at a stressful time of year. Drake and Valinda don't have any major obstacles to acknowledging and acting on their feelings. Valinda's controlling father is a bit of a threat, but he is very much offstage for most of the book. Drake is a sexy sweetheart and Valinda is a smart, kind, strong-willed person, so they were delightful to read about both individually and as a couple. The drama and tension in the story comes from how they encounter, navigate, and resist racist violence in Reconstruction-era Louisiana.
