Devil in Winter
by Lisa Kleypas

In this historical romance, Evie Jenner, a shy heiress with a stammer, asks notorious rake Sebastian Lord Vincent to marry her. Not out of love or even infatuation, but because Evie is desperate to escape her abusive scheming relatives and Sebastian is impoverished due to his father's mishandling of money. Their intention is to wed and then live separate lives. However, this is a romance novel so that is not what happens. During the journey to Scotland for a quickie marriage and then in the aftermath of Evie's father's death, she and Sebastian forge a bond amidst their desire for each other and fall deeply in love.
I loved this romance. The characters and their development were terrific. Sebastian's transformation from cold dissolute rake to a true lover and husband was great - it happened gradually over the course of the book and through small things as well as large. Evie starts out shy and uncertain of herself, but over the course of the book her quiet strength and will come out. These changes in the both are what underpins the strength of their love - they not only forge a very deep and passionate love, they become the people for whom that love works and makes sense.
