This post-apocalyptic novel is set in a near future in which most of the western hemisphere has been drowned in a cataclysmic flood after being ravaged by wars and earthquakes. One of the remaining bastions of civilization is Dinetah, ancestral home of the Navajo. In addition to reshaping the continent, the flood and earthquakes re-awakened the gods, mythical heroes, and magic of the Dine. Maggie Hoskie is a monster hunter, gifted with supernatural powers that aid her in the hunt. A fairly routine job uncovers a much larger and more dangerous mystery. As Maggie pursues it, she reluctantly teams up with Kai Arviso, a man with his own powers and secrets.
I enjoyed this book a lot. The world felt perhaps a little too possible, and very real. Maggie was such a great character - prickly, wounded, haunted, tough as nails, and while not always likable, someone I'd want to be around. The plot is as much about freedom from the past and its traumas as it is about vanquishing monsters, and the two elements mesh really well.
