When the Reckoning Comes
by LaTanya McQueen

Mira left her small town and poor upbringing behind years ago, but her childhood best friend is getting married and has invited her to the wedding. However, the event is going to be held at a refurbished plantation just outside of their hometown. Mira is uncomfortable about it, but goes anyway with hopes of reconnecting with Jesse, her other childhood friend who will be there. However, the enslaved dead are not quiet and will not let the site's racist, oppressive past be forgotten.
When the Reckoning Comes was dark and atmospheric, with the plantation and its past acting almost as another character. While the ghosts are very eerie, the visions of cruelty and suffering that they show Mira, as well as the present day racism of the town and the wedding guests, are far more frightening than any supernatural entity. I particularly enjoyed the way this book uses horror as a way to explore the consequences of ignoring or whitewashing history and the terrible truths about slavery for both individuals and whole communities.
