by Loretta Chase
Bookish Olympia Hightower is about to marry the notorious rake Ashmont, when, after having a bit too much brandy to calm her nerves, she panics and runs away right before the wedding. Ashmont's best friend Ripley goes after her, initiating a madcap chase and road trip during which they fall hopelessly in love.
I was slow to warm up to this book, but I ended up really enjoying it. Olympia is a bespectacled lover of rare books, and Ripley is a former rake who has recently matured enough to want more out of life than drink, casual sex, and pranks, and I liked each of them quite a lot, and the two of them as a couple even more. Their relationship paired deep feeling and a sense of fun and the combination of serious love and light-hearted interaction (including some terrific banter) was lovely to read.
