by Vivian Perlis
This book is a collection of excerpts from interviews with people who knew Charles Ives. The interviews were conducted in the late 1960s and early 1970s and include family, friends, business colleagues, and musicians. The memories and stories are often interesting and provide a lot of insight into Ives' life, personality, and relationships. It makes for very enjoyable reading. The book also makes a great companion to a more standard biography. Earlier this year, I read Swafford's biography of Ives, and this book was an excellent follow-up, filling in details and bringing Ives to life more fully.
