This enemies-to-lovers romance is set in the first half of the 19th century at the estate of Marcus, Lord Westcliff. Over the course of a month-long social gathering at the estate, American heiress Lillian Bowman and Marcus go from annoying and sparring with each other to a passionate and deep love. Lillian is a great character: strong, spirited, and sometimes reckless. Sure, she occasionally makes less than ideal choices out of pique or rebelliousness, but she never stops being a sympathetic and relatable person. Marcus had depths of emotion hidden beneath his completely proper and stoic exterior. He's devoted to doing things right, but doing the right thing and doing right by people is never sacrificed to propriety. The banter and sexual tension between Marcus and Lillian were top-notch. I loved how balanced and intertwined the lust and love aspects of their relationship were, and how those feelings deepened over the course of the book.
