A Night to Surrender
by Tessa Dare

This romance novel is set in the early 19th century in Spindle Cove, a quaint English seaside town that has become a refuge for young women who don't quite fit into society: too intellectual, too shy, too delicate, too lacking in conventional attractiveness. Spirited and smart, Susanna Finch is the unofficial leader of Spindle Cove, doing her best to make it a haven for women, and learning to be something of a healer. Victor Bramwell, newly made Lord Rycliff, arrives in Spindle Cove intending to raise a militia and is dismayed to find it filled with ladies. He and Susanna clash over his intentions for the village, while feeling an intense attraction for each other.
This novel was just ok. I loved Susanna and the setting. But I just wasn't into Bramwell. While he's not a complete misogynist and genuinely admires intelligent women, he starts off aggressive and very into masculinity, assuming that manliness is the solution to everything. Bramwell does undergo some nice character development where he learns to appreciate Spindle Cove for what it is and becomes more in touch with his feelings, but I wished some of it had come a little sooner. The ending was very well done and quite romantic, though.
