The Countess Conspiracy
by Courtney Milan

This rich and complex romance novel is set in 1867 Cambridge and London. Sebastian Malheur is both a rake and a scientist famous for scientific theories on inheritance of traits. Except those theories are not his, they are the work of his best friend Violet, the widowed Countess of Cambury. When the controversies around Violet's theories start to reach a breaking point, Sebastian wants out of their conspiracy, causing the expected crisis for their scientific partnership but also an unexpected one for their relationship and the feelings they've kept hidden away from each other.
I loved this book so much. Violet and Sebastian are both complex, fascinating characters that I just wanted to keep spending time with. Their relationship is so beautiful. Its foundation is a long-standing close friendship in which each of them truly sees the other and thus gives deep understanding and support. When their long-repressed romantic feelings start to emerge, the progression of their relationship is very satisfying. Violet has some deep traumas and insecurities stemming from her experiences in her marriage, and the way she and Sebastian work through them is achingly gorgeous and believable. In addition to the romance, the story around Violet coming to take credit for her work is also very good and satisfying, and explores the same themes of being truly seen and appreciated for who you really are.
