by Lisa Kleypas
This historical romance was thoroughly enjoyable. It's an enemies-to-lovers story about Annabelle, a dowry-less and penniless young woman who is desperate to find a wealthy aristocratic husband to keep herself and her widowed mother out of poverty. If only the irritating industrialist Simon Hunt would stop distracting her. Annabelle and Simon spar and maneuver while gradually succumbing to their attraction.
Things I especially loved:
Simon and the way he was so often arrogant and brash, yet when Annabelle really needed help or support, he was fully there for her and took good care of her without taking advantage of the situation.
Annabelle's clear-eyed awareness of the realities of her situation and her willingness to play the marriage game ruthlessly. Yet she is never heartless or cruel.
The sizzling sexual tension between Annabelle and Simon. *fans self*
Annabelle's mutually supportive friendships with other women.
