by P. Djèlí Clark
This short novella felt bigger than its 100-odd pages, in all the best ways. The Black God's Drums is set in a steampunk alternate history New Orleans. Creeper, a street urchin who receives visions from Oya, learns of a kidnapped scientist and uses this secret to bargain with Ann-Marie, captain of an airship. The ensuing adventure is tightly plotted and paced, with enough space for some beautifully economical world-building. This version of New Orleans is a fascinating and deep place that I hope Clark returns to.
