by Leigh Bardugo
Ruin and Rising is the final book in the Shadow and Bone trilogy, and it is a very satisfying conclusion to the story. There's a lot of action, but also a lot of emotion, and Bardugo balances both elements nicely. I may be in the minority, but I like how Alina and Mal's relationship plays out here. It's bittersweet, but also rings true. Without spoiling anything, I will say that I was prepared to be very annoyed at one aspect of the resolution, but the reasons behind it were solid and it played out so well that I ended mostly liking it. It works very well with the themes around the costs and dangers of power and the price of victory.
