edited by Andrew Ashbee
This volume contains a series of essays on various aspects of seventeenth century English instrumental music, nominally centering around composer John Jenkins. The chapters tend towards very deep and detailed musicological research, such as the minute examination of manuscripts to determine dating and copyists or an examination of the development and use of key signatures in consort music. There are also some interesting chapters on the social context of music and musicians during the era, and one almost fun chapter on how one of Gibbons' pieces was connected to a marriage scandal. As such, this book will be interesting primarily to those who are into the more scholarly side of music.
