I am such a geek

This evening I was practicing the left hand of the last movement of Beethoven's Sonata in Eb when a helicopter flew overhead. It approached as I was playing the cadence on Eb. The frequency of the helicopter noise was just slightly off from the Eb. I kept playing the Eb (Eb-2, if you're curious), listening to the dissonance. As the helicopter came closer, it got more in tune with the Eb, then dissonant again as it faded away. It was very cool.

Ha ha. You are a music geek. But I wish I could have heard this moment. I'm a music geek too, and have spent the last week jumping up and down over my cool sound processing results. And, a few weeks ago, I went into a detailed description of why the screech of the outbound T at Harvard is in fact a wonderful, rather than horrible, sound. Mmm, singing rails over the bass rumble of the train.

It was indeed pretty nifty. Especially the way the two timbres worked together - they are both kind of rumbly, but in very different ways. I felt very John Cage/4'33" about the whole thing.
