by Catherynne M. Valente
This is the third of the Fairyland books. This time September journeys to the Moon where she is reunited with her friends and discovers that a Yeti is threatening both the Moon and Fairyland. The narrative takes a while to get to the meat of the story, instead concentrating on exploring the Moon as well as September's friendship with A-through-L and changing relationship with Saturday. This one had a couple of plot twists I didn't quite see coming and a couple of really great set pieces. I especially liked the Country of Photography, where photographs are alive, mingling time and space. Valente weaves in really interesting themes of self-definition vs. how others define you, fate, choice, and how time and memory affect us.
