Outside the rural but far from typical small town of Staywater, there are six bridges on the route to the Okefenokee swamp. Except when there are seven. Newlyweds Titus and Melanie Bell start driving across the seventh bridge, and then Titus wakes up in the middle of the road, with no bridge in site and his wife gone missing. Meanwhile, in Staywater, teenaged Cameron is starting to chafe gently against his life with his two elderly godmothers.
This Southern gothic horror tale was delightfully mysterious and creepy. The plot is a slow burn, and the horror aspects are given a slow reveal, which gives plenty of time to steep in the eerie atmosphere of the setting. While most of the characters have moral failings that keep them from being entirely likable, they were all interesting and had stories I wanted to hear.
