Book Review
Oct. 7th, 2020 04:57 pmThe Cambridge Companion to Jewish Music
by Joshua S. Walden
This fascinating book looks at Jewish music in many of its manifestations: religious, popular, and art music. The focus is less on analyzing melodic, harmonic, or formal features that may or may not make music Jewish, and more on the historical, social, and cultural contexts and frameworks of the music and the people who made it. It was very interesting and addressed many important and large questions about what constitutes Jewish music and its position inside and outside of Jewish communities and culture.
