by Theodora Goss
European Travel for the Monstrous Gentlewoman is the sequel to The Strange Case of the Alchemist's Daughter, and it is even better. This time Mary and her fellow monsters, now having organized themselves as The Athena Club, travel across Europe to Vienna and Budapest to rescue Lucinda van Helsing from her father's experimentation and machinations and finally confront the Society of Alchemists.
I really enjoyed this book. The plot was very compelling and adventurous, and the characters, both old and new, continue to be wonderful. I especially love the way Goss reinterprets classic vampire tales and legends, with a subtly feminist take on the women in them. I also was delighted by the way the book is both a road-trip story and perhaps a twisted version of the traditional European Grand Tour.
