Schutz
by Basil Smallman

This book is both a biography and a survey of Schutz's music. Smallman includes just the right amount of detail when describing pieces, concentrating on overall style and content rather than giving an exhaustive (and often tedious) play-by-play. I gained a really good understanding of Schutz's music and how it fit into the development of common-practice harmony as work on the cusp of the Renaissance and Baroque eras. I could have done with a little more biographical detail, especially around Schutz's duties and life as a court kapellmeister, as it would have given more context for his works and a better picture of 17th century musical life.
