A Valentine for the Library

I love the library. I love it so much that an after-work stop by the Boston Public Library is something I actually look forward to throughout the day. It's something I think of as a treat, a pleasure to be savored. And it's not just the BPL - I've felt this way about the library in every town I've lived in. although I do have to admit that the sheer size and scope of the BPL make it a particular delight. Not to mention the beautiful architecture and Sargent murals in the older part.
Obviously, the massive collection of books is a big part of my love of libraries. I adore wandering the fiction section, browsing through the stacks, looking for books to read. I end up making lots of mental notes about the authors, titles, and approximate locations of the ones that I find interesting. I can get all the pleasures of browsing in a bookstore, without having to ever think about my budget (or how many more books I can fit in my apartment). And I can spend as long as I want in there without anyone giving me the evil eye for not buying anything.
I also like the atmosphere. Libraries are generally quiet, tranquil places. Nobody bothers you, or tries to help you unless you ask them to. And it's easy to find things on your own (I love electronic card catalogs). There are plenty of tables and chairs, and you don't have to check anything out to use the facilities or services.
The only thing better than going to the library is reading the books I get there.
