by N.K. Jemisin
This is a wonderful short story collection by one of my favorite authors. Unsurprisingly, it was excellent. The stories vary in subject, tone, and even genre, but there isn't a dud in the bunch. Jemisin's writing, characterization, and world-building are amazing as always. Although the stories are wholly separate as far as settings and characters, themes of survival and resistance in a world that is hostile and unaccepting of one run through many of the tales. "Red Dirt Witch" brings together the unseelie fae and the Jim Crow South and made me cry. "The Evaluators" was a bit of a puzzle, but once I figured it out, I was terrified. I really identified with "The Valedictorian" and what it says about being smart and striving for excellence in a world that doesn't really want you to do either of those things.
