Eight Skilled Gentlemen
by Barry Hughart

This is, regrettably, the last of the Master Li and Number Ten Ox books, which are excellent mysteries set in ancient China. They have a dash of fantasy to them in that they incorporate elements of Chinese myth and legend. In this book, Master Li and Number Ten Ox begin investigating a supernatural murder and become embroiled in a quest to find out the nature of a set of ancient birdcage-like artifacts, who is after them, and why. It all involves a lot of adventure, skullduggery, and clever trickery as well as a wide cast of entertaining secondary characters. It was a lot of fun and exceedingly well-paced.
