Thick as Thieves
by Megan Whalen Turner

Thick as Thieves is the fifth book in the Queen's Thief series. This time we start off in the Mede empire, which has its acquisitive eyes on Attolia. Kamet is a powerful and educated slave to Nahuseresh, a highly-placed noble of the empire. However, when Kamet's fortunes suddenly go all pear-shaped, he takes the chance at freedom offered by a mysterious Attolian soldier. Kamet and the Attolian start off on a cross-country journey to escape the empire and the deadly soldiers pursuing them.
This was a very enjoyable YA novel - kind of a road trip story with a lot of suspense and danger. I loved the way the friendship between Kamet and the Attolian developed over the course of their travels, and way Kamet's world view changes as he experiences freedom and sees more of life outside the palace walls. The intrigue and political maneuvering in the wake of Kamet's arrival in Attolia was an added bonus. King Eugenides remains a terrific character in all his cleverness and humor.
