This very detailed and technical book looks at the trouvere repertoire as preserved in manuscripts and makes several interesting conclusion based on some very close readings of the sources. O'Neill focuses on the way the melodies vary across manuscripts and also on the melodic structures of the pieces. She uses this evidence to uncover the ways orality operated in the repertoire and practices of the trouveres, and the way the music shifted stylistically over time. Although occasionally I found that the writing got a little bogged down in the details, this book was overall an intriguing look at this music.
