Last weekend and this weekend, Other Kenjari and I have stayed in and watched movies. It's cold and the streets are still clogged with snow here, so venturing outside is less than appealing.
Troy
A fluffy ancient history action movie, it's very much the Cliffs Notes version of the Iliad. Nice battle scenes and Sean Bean as Odysseus are the best things about the film. Otherwise, it's entertaining but forgettable.
Brotherhood of the Wolf
French film meets Hong Kong action cinema in the best way possible. This is also the most Goth movie I have ever seen. Lots of flickering candle-light and lush, misty forests. Sumptuous costumes and many pretty stone chateaux. The action scenes are very good, and the intrigue is mysterious yet not too difficult to follow.
Ed Wood
This is not the best movie that either Tim Burton or Johnny Depp have ever done, but it's still pretty good. Especially if you've ever seen Plan 9 from Outer Space. And Martin Landau is wonderful as Bela Lugosi - he steals the movie from Johnny Depp, amazingly enough.
Sky Captain and the World of Tommorow
The visuals are the real star of this movie: it has the luminosity of old black and white films, but in color; and it faithfully recreates the look of the late 1930s. Sure, the characters aren't well developed and the ending is a little disappointing. But I've got a lot of admiration for the director's vision. I think he must have seen Miyazaki's Laputa and Porco Rosso, though. The giant robots bear a very close resemblance to the robots in Laputa, and Sky Captain's island base strongly called to mind Porco Rosso's island.
The Royal Tenenbaums
Other Kenjari and I saw The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, and we enjoyed it so much that we decided to rent this movie. The Royal Tenenbaums is a much more serious film than The Life Aquatic, but I think it is better. The characters have more depth and the scenes and situations are more meaningful. I think Anderson is saying something with The Royal Tenenbaums, while maybe he was just having fun with The Life Aquatic.
